West Chicago Resource Fair
On Thursday, March 22, attorney Kirsten Izatt and the marketing team attended the District 94 Resource Fair for Students and Adults with Disabilities. The Fair was held at the West Chicago Community High School. Many organizations were represented including: Day One Reliance, Protected Tomorrows, Special Olympics, PACT, and Ray Graham Association. Thanks to Anna Co for all the work she did to make this inaugural event such a success. Anna can be contacted at 630.876.6267.
We would like to highlight one group that we met that evening – Parents Alliance Employment Project (PAEP). We spoke with their representative Jamie Schmidt, Employment Specialist. PAEP is devoted to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities through individualized employment services. PAEP has existed since 1982. It is unique in that it was parent initiated and operated for many years staffed solely by parent volunteers. This network of parents became proactive when the only employment option for their developmentally disabled young adults was a sheltered workshop. They fought for mainstreaming their children in the public school system and community integration. PAEP is unique because it emphasized integrated work with supports into businesses long before the national trend. PAEP provides a variety of programs and services to individuals with developmental disabilities including career counseling, job training and preparation, job development, job placement, and job coaching and follow-up. PAEP is located at 2525 Cabot Drive, Suite 302, Lisle, IL 60532. The phone number is 630.955.2079. And the website is www.parents-alliance.org.
